Climate Change Advisors Ghana's Indigenous Knowledge Project Transforms Agriculture and Livelihoods

In an effort to tackle the adverse impacts of climate change, Climate Change Advisors Ghana (CCAG), a not-for-profit organization, is pioneering a groundbreaking project titled "Mobilizing Community Indigenous Knowledge for Climate Resilience in Ghana." Dr. Samuel Ayeh Ofori, Director of Programmes and Research for CCAG, emphasizes the importance of indigenous knowledge as "traditional science" that local communities use to improve their livelihoods. 

Local farmers in Ghana have been grappling with multiple challenges brought about by climate change, including soil erosion due to heavy downpours, nutrient depletion, and increased pest infestations. To address these issues, CCAG introduced innovative interventions, such as the use of local manure to enhance soil fertility and the implementation of integrated pest management techniques.

What sets CCAG's approach apart is its "participatory rural approach," which engages a wide spectrum of community members, including opinion leaders, youth groups, marginalized women, and men. This approach fosters commitment, participation, ownership, and adoption of the strategies introduced by CCAG.

The results of this project have been truly transformative for local farmers. It has led to increased crop yields, improved livestock growth rates, enhanced income levels, greater food security, and the development of sustainable livelihoods for the communities involved.

Currently, the project has impacted 300 local farmers across nine communities in the Cape Coast North District in the Central Region of Ghana. CCAG is now extending the project to two additional municipalities, Mfantseman and Agona East District, with the aim of reaching 3,000 people within these areas.

However, the sustainability of this vital initiative is at risk, as it has been solely supported by the founders of CCAG. Dr. Samuel Ayeh Ofori passionately appealed to the international community for long-term financing and support, highlighting the disproportionate vulnerability of rural farming communities in Africa to the effects of climate change, despite contributing the least to global emissions.

Nasir Ahmed expressed his gratitude for the training sessions and knowledge provided by CCAG, emphasizing the positive changes they are witnessing. He further described the disruptions in planting seasons caused by unpredictable weather patterns and the challenges they bring to farmers. Mr. Ahmed offered his heartfelt thanks to CCAG and appealed to the government and donor agencies for support, emphasizing the invaluable knowledge they have provided.

Efia Wiredu noted the shifts in farming practices due to changing land fertility and increased pest pressures. She highlighted how CCAG's training has been instrumental in helping them adapt to these challenges.

Kwame Mensah showcased the work he has accomplished with CCAG's support.

Adowa Haleema shed light on the challenges faced by farmers due to climate change and expressed her hope for continued government and NGO support to sustain the work started by CCAG.

Egya Kojo Alhassan credited CCAG's advice for eliminating harmful farming practices like burning fields before planting.

Ekow Issah described how CCAG helped farmers adapt to changing planting seasons and improve their understanding of soil nutrients and fertilizer use.

A Desperate Plea: Life-Threatening Condition Struggles of Basic 7 Pupil at Attakwaa T. I. Ahmadiyya Basic School

Collins Entsir, a 15-year-old pupil of Attakwaa T. I. Ahmadiyya Basic School in the Ekumfi District of Ghana, has spent over a decade grappling with a life-threatening condition that remains shrouded in mystery. His eyes have transformed from their natural state to a deep yellowish hue, and his once-robust physique now conceals a protruding stomach. The condition has cast a shadow over his academic potential, leaving him struggling in his studies.

From the age of one, Collins' mother, Madam Halima Esi Tawiah, noticed an unsettling change in her son's appearance, a change that would lead her to seek medical attention and even explore traditional remedies. At one point, he was diagnosed with anemia, and a regimen of medication was prescribed. Yet, the improvement was minimal, and the family's anguish persisted.

It was only when a local remedy, derived from boiling the scales of herrings, was introduced that they observed any significant change. Despite their limited financial means, the family managed to obtain a health insurance card to ease the burden of medical bills. Collins' parents, Mr. Paul Wisdom Nkyi and Madam Halima, are dedicated to their son's care, but the weight of their circumstances often leads others to mistakenly perceive them as negligent.

Collins faces not only physical challenges but also the emotional burden of being different from his peers. His relatives, teachers, and even a former headteacher of his school, Mr. Malik Amosa Mensah, have all rallied to support the family find a lasting remedy for young Collins. Nonetheless, the financial constraints they face persist.

Collins Entsir carries a heavy burden of embarrassment due to his situation. He earnestly appeals to the global community for assistance in obtaining a precise diagnosis of his condition and charting a path forward to recovery. His desperate plea echoes the world over: "I want to look like my colleagues," he tearfully implores. This heartfelt cry extends beyond the physical transformation he desires; it is a call for help, an appeal to lift him from the shadow of stigma. It is a plea to restore not only his appearance but also his hope.

Five months ago, Collins sustained a seemingly minor wound on his right foot. Unbelievably, the wound remains unhealed, underscoring the gravity of his condition. Collins' malnourished appearance serves as a testament to the physical toll his condition has taken.

Madam Esi Tawiah joins her son's plea, her voice laden with emotion. "The government, NGOs, individuals, and all who can make a difference, please come to our aid," she implores.

As Collins' hope hangs in the balance, he endures the agony of an unidentified condition that challenges his very existence. This is a story of resilience and the enduring human spirit, a reminder that every life deserves a chance to flourish, no matter the obstacles it faces.

In the midst of this heart-wrenching struggle, Madam Esi Tawiah and Mr. Paul Wisdom Nkyi find solace in a quote that resonates with their relentless determination: "In the darkest hour, the power of a family's love can illuminate the path to hope and healing." Unlocking Saltpond's Potential: A Call for Stronger Leadership and Government Investment

In a compelling article penned by renowned Counselling Psychologist and concerned Saltpond native, Mr. Suleman Dadzie, the town of Saltpond in Ghana's Central Region finds itself at a crossroads. Mr. Dadzie's impassioned words shed light on the immense untapped potential of this historically significant town and the urgent need for revitalization.

Saltpond, a town rich in history and educational infrastructure, boasts five (5) Senior High Schools and a Technical, Vocational, and Training Institute. Notably, it holds a pivotal place in Ghana's history as the former office location of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president, and the birthplace of the United Gold Coast Convention, the nation's inaugural political party. Its offshore oil field and Lithium reserves further underscore its resource potential.

Dadzie identifies two key factors thwarting Saltpond's progress: Poor Leadership and Governmental Neglect. He laments the dearth of visionary leaders who could effectively manage the town's resources, leading to missed opportunities. Saltpond's historical importance and resource wealth have often been overlooked by policymakers, resulting in inadequate investment in critical infrastructure, healthcare facilities, and public services.

Saltpond has been the birthplace and home to several distinguished Ghanaians, including the late Prof. Ewurama Addy, late Prof. FKA Allotey, Prof. Gyampo of the University of Ghana, broadcasting legend Abeiku Aggrey Santana, and the late Prof. P. A. V. Ansah. 

Despite the recent discovery of substantial Lithium deposits, an opportunity for economic prosperity, Saltpond is yet to realize its potential in this high-tech world. The absence of necessary investment and support could result in this opportunity slipping through the town's fingers.

Counsellor Suleman Dadzie proposes a comprehensive approach to breathe new life into Saltpond: Stronger Leadership: Saltpond needs capable and visionary leaders to steer its development and resource management effectively.

Government Investment: The central government must recognize Saltpond's potential and invest in crucial areas, including infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Responsible Resource Management: Ensuring equitable benefits for the community requires proper management of resources like lithium.

Public-Private Partnerships: Encouraging private sector investments can generate jobs and stimulate economic growth.

Former Presiding Member Calls for Contract Extension of Ekumfi District's Education Director

In a remarkable display of appreciation and dedication to quality education in the Ekumfi District, former Presiding Member, Mr. Kwamina Amoasi-Andoh, has urged support from community leaders, dignitaries, and education stakeholders to vote in favour of a five-year contract extension for Mr. Isaac Oscar Odoom, the District Director of Education for Ekumfi. Mr. Odoom's unwavering commitment and selfless contributions to the Directorate have earned him this plea for continued service.

This plea was delivered during the 2nd Awards' Day Ceremony of the District, held on Thursday, October 5, 2023, under the theme "Honouring Our Heroes for Quality Education in Ekumfi District." The event was designed to celebrate excellence and recognize teachers, especially those serving in hard-to-reach communities, with the aim of inspiring, attracting, and retaining talented educators.

Honourable Amoasi-Andoh, himself an honouree at the event, conveyed the sentiments of the community by appealing to Traditional Leaders, Clergy, Dignitaries, and education stakeholders to jointly petition the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, among other important institutions, to extend Mr. Isaac Oscar Odoom's tenure. Such an extension would allow him to continue his exceptional legacy of service to the district.

During his address, Mr. Kwamina Amoasi-Andoh expressed gratitude to all awardees and emphasized the importance of valuing and cherishing teachers as invaluable assets to the community. A total of 63 awards were presented to deserving individuals during the ceremony.

The granting of this petition would enable Director Odoom and his capable team to maintain their exemplary work, in line with their vision for the 3rd edition of the awards ceremony, scheduled for May 2024. Mr. Benjamin Kwasi Asare, the Central Regional Planning and Monitoring Officer for the Ghana Education Service, delivered a compelling message during the 2nd Ekumfi Education District Awards' Day Ceremony held on Thursday, October 5, 2023. The event coincided with World Teachers' Day, a global celebration of outstanding educators.

In his address on behalf of the Central Regional Director of Education, Mr. Emmanuel Essuman, Mr. Asare commended teachers and award recipients and called upon them, along with education stakeholders, to become catalysts for positive change in the world. He emphasized that the best teachers are those who inspire students to seek answers themselves, highlighting the pivotal role of educators in shaping future generations.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by teachers and schools, Mr. Asare drew attention to issues such as the deplorable condition of school buildings, citing the Dunkwa Abontsen D/A Basic School within the Ekumfi District as an example. The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) marked World Teachers' Day in grand style by organizing a series of fun-filled games for its members in the Mankessim Local chapter. The event took place at Mankessim School Kessim on October 5, 2023, revolving around the theme, "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage."

Mr. Christopher Francis Aidoo, the Local Secretary, extended warm congratulations to teachers for their unwavering dedication and selfless service to education. He encouraged them to use this day as an opportunity for reflection on their achievements. Mr. Aidoo did, however, express concerns about the low turnout of teachers at the event.

The celebration featured a variety of enjoyable activities, including Volleyball, Cards, Ludo, and Draughts, which brought teachers together in a spirit of camaraderie.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Padmore Arthur, the Municipal Chairman for GNAT in Mfantseman, outlined three essential principles for teachers: "inform, form, and transform." He stressed the importance of teachers possessing a strong grasp of their subject matter to effectively inform their students, molding learners to improve their current situations, and inspiring them to become agents of change. Mr. Arthur emphasized that by adhering to these principles, teachers would become the educators the world needs.

He concluded by stating that education should be purposeful and fit for its intended goals.

The celebration saw teachers actively participating in the games, accompanied by lively dancing and the enjoyment of locally prepared meals.

Attakwaa T. I. Ahmadiyya Basic School held a momentous event on September 12, 2023, in Ekumfi Attakwaa, marking its inaugural Kindergarten Graduation and Appreciation Day, themed "One Good Turn Deserves Another." This remarkable occasion featured a splendid ceremony where graduating kindergarten pupils were adorned with prestigious gold-plated medals, and various commendations were bestowed upon longstanding teachers, former headteachers, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and School Management Committee (SMC) executives, the top performer in the 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), and the exceptional kindergarten teachers. The event was masterfully orchestrated by Mr. George Eshun, the Master of Ceremony, and brought together pupils, parents, educators, and esteemed guests to celebrate achievements and commitment.

The festivities commenced with an atmosphere of excitement and pride, as ten (10) young KG graduands, donned in caps and gowns, embarked on a journey filled with promise for a bright future. Auntie Aba Amponsah Baah, the event's Chairperson, extended a warm welcome to all attendees and stressed the pivotal role of early childhood education in shaping young minds.
